We don’t have a generic price list as each frame is different, cost of frames depend on the size of the piece as well as the moulding, the glass, the mounting and the finish you choose on your frame. However, if you have a rough idea of what you would your framing job would cost, we are more than happy to give you a quote.
Our usual turnaround time is 3 weeks, so if you’re planning to frame something for a gift or exhibition please ensure you allow for this time period. We can supply a quicker turnaround time or rush jobs however this will come at an extra cost and also can limit the options available.
We have no real size limit to what we can frame however, if we can’t fit it in and out of our door, please take into account that this means it most probably will fit in most doors. Nevertheless we can still do it however, it will have to be done at our factory in Cornwall and the delivered straight to you.
Do you have something obscure? Do not worry, we have framed many different things in our 30 years of existing. From tennis rackets, shark teeth and wine bottles to football shirts, scarfs and fabrics we can frame them.
We stock and supply well over a hundred mouldings for you to pick from which all differ from one another meaning we can find the perfect match for beloved piece of art. Most of our mouldings are natural solid woods but we also have a range of aluminium mouldings and if you are looking for a slightly cheaper options we have a span of ready finished mouldings.
Wood Mouldings
Different mouldings come in different woods and some are available in multiple woods (oak, beech, pine, ash, o’beeche). Solid wood mouldings generally are more robust and a better choice when it comes to protecting and showcasing your prints, using different stains, paints and hand gilded finishes we can execute the perfect finish to accompany your piece.
Aluminium Mouldings
Aluminium profiles are another good choice if you’re looking for a contemporary finish and generally go great with posters and certificates. If you would prefer aluminium to wood, we offer all aluminium profiles by both Neilson and Arqadia.
Ready Finished Mouldings
If you are looking for a slightly cheaper options for your framing job, we provide a range of ready finished moulding. Don’t worry, they still look brilliant and provide the same amount of protection to your artwork however, they are generally made out of softer woods and have plastic finishes on top meaning they are less durable and chip easily.
Unless stated otherwise, we will use our regular 2mm float glass as standard for your framing job. However, if you would like any other type of glass or perspex we offer a range of different glazing options such as;
Artglass AR70 & AR92
Previously known as “Artglass WW”, this glass is an anti-reflective glass which reduces unwanted residual reflections 8 times less than regular glass and blocks 70% of UV light.
The AR92 was previously known as “Artglass WW UV90” and is the perfect balance between UV protection (blocking 92% of UV light” and clarity (with <1% reflection).
Museum Glass
When it comes to glazing, this glass is unmatched, providing the highest levels of UV filtrations (99%) this is the most premium product when it comes to protecting your valuable artwork.
Perspex (Clear Styrene)
A thin, clear, relatively brittle plastic - If you wanted perspex this would used instead of regular glass.
Non-Relective Styrene
This perspex has a chemically etched diffused face to give a plastic alternative to the AR70 for the brighter areas of your home.
Artglass AR99 Acrylic
A strong, clear acrylic with a UV blocking coating absorbing 99% of Uv radiation, as well as an anti-reflective coating and a scratch resistant coating.
Not all pieces need mounting, Posters for instance are an example of something we do not feel needs a mount (mounting) thus can just go straight in to the frame. In the case we do suggest Fillets to keep the image off the glass. We offer a range of different mounting options (all of which are reversible) for your works as show below;
Window Mounts
A window mount is a piece of acid free mount board with a cutout bevelled edged window, through which art is viewed through. The art is mounted to another piece of acid free board which is hinged to the window mount using acid free tape.
Flat Float
A “Flat Float” is when a print is flat on top of an acid free board of choice usually with a border which changes depending on size of the print and the desired aesthetics of a the customers choice. Giving the look as if the piece is “floating”
Float Mount
A “Float Mount” is essentially the same as a “Flat Float” however, a “Window Mount” will be place on top of the acid free board usually with a gap of around 5mm (depending on aesthetics) between the edge of the image and the bevelled edge of the window mount.
Raised Float
Similar to a “Flat Float”, A “Raised Float” also gives the illusion that the piece is “floating” however, the is a piece of 5mm acid free Foam in between the mountboard and the print where the term “raised” comes from. Artwork with torn edges tend to look best when they are floated in any of the ways above.
Please note that we stock all Arqadia, Centrado and Bainbridge mountboard’s which are all acid free and essential to preserving your valued work. Even if you do not wish to have your framing done with us, we strongly suggest you make sure where you do have your art framed uses acid free mountboard. Otherwise this can lead to discolouration and damage to the artwork which ultimately devalue the piece or even ruin it.
We supply a wide range of different finishes for you frames such as waxes, stains and paints, if you are looking for something a bit more traditional we also offer a large range of Hand Gilded Finishes. Our expert framers will help advise you and guide you to pick the best possible finish that will complement your art.
Stained Finishes
Our collection of stains can be applied to any of our bare wood mouldings that we offer. Although black matt being the most popular option for most clients, our stains also come in mahogany, yew, off black, jacobean, dark jacobean, english walnut and teak. All of these can be slightly altered in colour to help complement your work. The brilliant thing about stains for most people is that you can still see the grain in the hard wood you have chosen however, if this is not to your taste then a spray finish is more advisable.
Spray Finishes
Portobello Frames most popular spray finish would be the white, although spray finishes are more expensive the overall result is far greater than what can be done with a brush. Down at our factory in Cornwall we have a state of the art spray booth which allows us to produce a finish like no other. Not only is the finish brilliant, within the spray booth we have a paint mixing system which means we can match and produce any Farrow & Ball, RAL or British Standard colour.
Not all canvases come stretched and for this reason Portobello Frames offers a stretching service with 3 different depths to match the original stretcher marks. Other materials and fabrics other than canvases may need to be stretched as well.
After being stretched canvases do not need to be protected by glass, this means that there are other ways to frame a canvas. Tray frames being the most popular are a brilliant way to compliment you acrylic art, however you could also have a regular frame as well (either with or without glass). Tray frames are also a brilliant way of displaying acrylics on boards and aluminium and polished mirrors.
Dry-mounting is used for aesthetic reasons, it is the process of permanently sealing your poster, print of photograph to either aluminium, foam core or board depending on the type of image. The finished process results in a flat, flush image however, if the piece is valuable, archival or cannot be replaced we advise you do not have dry-mounting as it is irreversible.
Perspex are becoming more and more popular, and why wouldn’t they be? If done right they are an excellent alternative to regular framing and a great method showcasing your prized things. There a few different details to take into account when choosing your perspex box. Firstly the backing of the box to which the case is screwed to. The most common being a perspex back, a sprayed mdf back or a subframe with a coloured board. Secondly you will need to consider is the depth of the box, all of which our experienced team can advise on.
Please note due to these variants we will not be able to give you a price on the day, if you would like a price beforehand please contact us. Also note that perspex boxes tend to have slightly longer turnaround time than our usual frames.
